A green-fingered grandma could not believe her eyes when she spotted tiny yellow fruits budding at the top of a tropical plant in her garden – despite the December frosts.
Dorothy Murray, 79, was stunned when she went into the garden of her Portishead home to check her banana plants and found one had started bearing fruit, reports the Bristol Evening Post.
The plants were given to Mrs Murray by her sister six years ago. However, this is the first time they have borne fruit.
Mrs Murray, a grandmother of four, said she asked a friend to climb up and check the top of the 12 ft plants after spotting yellow in among the leaves.
"When they climbed up there they saw several bananas and even picked a couple, which were very tiny," she said.
Mrs Murray has now covered the remaining bananas – which are normally native to the tropical region of South East Asia – with plastic to protect them from the winter frosts.
