They have featured in a collaboration with the musical Grease and travelled the country in a branded Mini Clubman.
Now the growers behind Pink Lady apples are hoping to hit 800,000 tonnes of production worldwide in the next ten years as awareness and consumption continues to rise rapidly in the UK.
Thierry Mellenotte, director of Pink Lady Europe, told visitors at the fresh produce trade show Fruit Logista, held recently in Berlin, that he would like to see apple production increase from 350,000 tonnes last year to 800,000 tonnes by 2020.
Mr Mellenotte said there had been 14,200 hectares of the premium apple planted globally in 2009.
And if last year is anything to go by, Pink Lady will enjoy another strong year in the UK.
As well as their starring role in Grease, the rosy-skinned apples have also featured in the London marathon – with 55,000 of the fruits provided for the event.
Pink Lady also teamed up with up-market retailer Harrods to launch a limited selection of apples bearing heart-shaped ‘birthmarks’, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
