Identity crisis apple

Looking at the outside, the new Redlove variety of apple looks like any other.

However, you shouldn’t let the red and shiny exterior of the fruit deceive you, as it’s actually suffering from a slight identity crisis when you delve beneath the surface as it rather resembles a tomato.

The red runs all the way through the apple to the core of it, unlike any other variety of the popular fruit.

Apparently, this variant is even healthier than your bog-standard apple too, as its red flesh is even richer in antioxidants.

The antioxidants in apples help prevent cancer as they reduce or completely halt oxidisation, which counters cell and tissue damage caused by free radicals in the body.

Redlove apples even keep their colour after they’ve been cooked or pressed, so when they’re made into a tasty cider, it’s red rather than yellow-tinged.

An even bigger bonus of the fruit is that it won’t even turn brown like most other apples, so it stays bright red however long it’s left out for.

Orchards around Europe are now being planted with seed saplings from Redloves, which are the product of a Swiss fruit grower, meaning that within the next few years there may even be a new favourite in the office fruit basket.
