Fruit can help reduce the risk of developing eye conditions such as glaucoma, it has been claimed.
World Glaucoma Week kicks off today (March 8th) to spread awareness and understanding about the condition, which is the world’s second-leading cause of blindness.
Glaucoma occurs when fluid builds up behind the eye, resulting in pressure which can cause damage to the optic nerve and vision loss.
People are more likely to develop glaucoma if they are over 60 years of age, have conditions such as diabetes or myopia (near-sightedness), or have a family history of the condition.
However, the severity of glaucoma can be reduced by early detection.
What is more, the website Natural Eye Care states that fruit such as raspberries, plums and apples could help stop the disease from occurring altogether.
Blueberries, cherries and tomatoes are other ‘superfoods’ that have been highlighted as a potential cure for glaucoma thanks to their high concentration of antioxidants, according to the University of Maryland.
