While snacks from the office fruit basket can hit the spot mid-morning, few have ever hankered for a banana while at the kebab shop.
But one council is considering getting takeaways to offer subsidised fruit and vegetables.
Lindsay Frost, Croydon council’s cabinet member for health and adult social care thinks this is a good way to combat the county’s unhealthy weights.
Bless.
Those craving a spicy kebab, greasy pizza or fish and chips – and let’s be honest, this is probably at 02:00 BST after a session in the pub – usually are not given to epiphanies about how healthy their dietary habits are, it was pointed out by local kebab shop owners.
Manager of the Golden Fry Fish Bar Shiwalla Shah told Croydon Today punters want golden fried batter, not golden delicious apples if they happen to find themselves at a takeaway.
"This [proposal] doesn’t make much sense," she observed.
So good luck with that Croydon, but short of giving citizens the same cognitive behaviour therapy that allowed Doncaster dad Darren Rafferty to overcome his deep-seated fruit and vegetable-phobia, this may not catch on.
According to the Sheffield Star, Mr Rafferty’s fear dated back to childhood and it took six months of psychological work to change his attitude towards the healthy fare.
