Many of you office fruit fans probably get to the delivery as quickly as possible to make sure your fruit’s in optimum condition when you eat it.
But, if a new venture is realised, this could be a thing of the past as there might soon be a revolutionary system for keeping fruit and veg fresher for longer.
The North East venture capital fund is expected to pledge £100,000 to a Newcastle firm to help it commercialise and improve its Smartpellet system, which will prolong the life of fresh produce, reports NE Business.
Biofresh, which is an offshoot of Newcastle University, launched the Smartpellet last year.
It releases ozone into the produce while it is being transported to stop the fruit and veg ripening before it arrives at its destination.
At the moment, the system can perform over periods of four to five days. Biofresh hopes the additional funding will allow it to develop the system to work over a 30-day period.
If this were to happen, your office fruit pears, which provide you with a quick energy boost during the day, could be at just the right level of ripeness when they arrive at your office.
