Prime minister Gordon Brown has reportedly realised the benefits of office fruit after it was revealed that he eats up to nine bananas each day.
It believed that Mr Brown’s wife Sarah is responsible for the change in diet, with the PM eating bananas as a replacement for Kit Kats ahead of what is expected to be a gruelling election campaign.
A Downing Street spokesman said that Gordon Brown had long been of the view that sticking to a balanced diet is important.
"Portions of fruit and veg taken on a daily basis can only lead to good health and radiance," he explained.
Bananas can form part of fruit deliveries in London and are noted for their high carbohydrate and fibre content.
The Sun originally reported that the prime minister had reduced his intake of Kit Kats and cited a Downing Street source as saying that he "can’t get enough" of bananas.
Growing in hanging clusters, up to 20 bananas can grow in each tier, which is usually referred to as a hand.
