Those who take their snacks from the office fruit basket could display better cognitive performance, scientists have found.
Researchers at the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology I of the Heinrich-Heine University in Germany found that this improved mental capacity could even stave off dementia.
The report, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, stated: "Modification of nutritional habits aimed at increasing intake of fruits and vegetable … should be encouraged to lower the prevalence of cognitive impairment."
People should start this type of diet "as early as possible", the study went on to recommend.
In addition to this benefit, findings showed lower incidence of lipid damage from free radicals, which are fought by the antioxidants present in these foods.
Another perk in these eating habits was recently discovered by scientists.
Researchers at the University of Leicester and Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology in Portugal found that the high vitamin C content in fruit – such as oranges – aided skin regeneration.
