Smoothies ‘not as healthy as thought’

Although the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) did recently clear Innocent’s claim that one of their smoothies was worth two of the recommended five fruit and vegetables a day – this does not mean smoothies are necessarily healthier than a snack from the office fruit basket.

In fact, some of these beverages could be detrimental for workers who are watching their waistlines.

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Vanilla and Honey Yogurt Smoothie contains 6.8 grams of fat and 33 grams of sugar.

Likewise, adverts promoting This Water lemon and lime drink as "simple, natural" was found by the ASA to be misleading as it contained up to 42 grams of added sugar.

The regulator did uphold Innocent’s claims of being a healthy way to get back of your five-a-day because it contained 100 per cent pure fruit juice.

Innocent smoothie-makers told the advertising watch-dog they hoped those viewing the adverts would not be tempted to only drink smoothies and would take their extra potions in the form of fruit
