An office fruit basket is a good way to keep snacks at bay and stay healthy.
Now that message is getting even louder, as new research from Scotland shows that obesity is not only a serious disease in its own right but can exacerbate the negative effects of alcohol.
A study from the University of Glasgow revealed that alcohol and obesity mix together to create a "deadly liver disease cocktail".
Those drinkers who are overweight are said to be at much greater risk of developing deadly liver diseases, with scientists studying the evidence gathered from nearly 30,000 people and publishing their findings in the British Medical Journal.
Dr Carole Hart, of the university’s section of public health and health policy, commented: "There was already considerable evidence that on their own, both alcohol consumption and raised BMI were risk factors for developing liver disease.
"What our study has shown is that when both these factors are combined there is a supra-additive effect, meaning the risk of developing liver disease is even higher than the sum of their separate effects."
Given the rising rates of chronic liver disease in Scotland – trebling in the last 15 years – the drive towards a healthier, fruit-filled lifestyle is likely to gather momentum.
Fruit is a simple and tasty way to avoid eating calorific or sugary foods, with an office fruit basket an easy way to help avoid temptation and stay healthy.
