Around a third of Brits say their diet has worsened since the start of the recent economic downturn, with junk food and ready meals eaten more often than fresh fruit.
Some 36 million people fail to get the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, with many mistakenly believing that convenience foods are cheaper than the fresher, and healthier, options.
The survey, carried out by the Health Food Manufacturers’ Association, also reveals that more than a quarter ignore nutritional guidelines altogether.
Furthermore, even those who do aim to get five a day are often wide of the mark.
Some believe things such as cheese and onion crisps, wine and tomato ketchup count towards their targets.
Tomato may officially be a fruit rather than a vegetable, and grapes come fourth in the nation’s favourite fruits, but only the real things will get you anywhere near to the recommended levels.
