Dark chocolate may help prevent strokes – but only as part of a healthy diet

Office fruit box news:

Antioxidants in dark chocolate may help to prevent a stroke but a healthy diet which includes fresh fruit should still be followed, according to the British Dietetic Association (BDA).

US researchers recently found that antioxidants in dark chocolate called polyphenols can have a protective effect against stroke.

However, Sian Porter, dietician and spokesperson for the BDA, said that eating dark chocolate in moderation would most likely only have a limited effect on reducing stroke risk.

"It still has to be eaten as part of a healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle," she explained.

She explained that more research would be needed to determine whether the findings could be used to develop a treatment that could prevent strokes from occurring.

Polyphones are also found in a wide array of fresh fruits, such as apples, blackberries, blueberries, melon, cherries, cranberries, grapes, pears, plums, raspberries, and strawberries.

However, Ms Porter noted that unlike chocolate, fruit also contained the added benefits of fibre and vitamin C.
