Has Wales gone bananas? It would appear so – or at least the banana growth has gone crazy thanks to the recent hot temperatures the country’s been experiencing.
Earlier this week, temperatures in Wales beat those in the south of France, which has led to a boom in tropical fruit growth.
Bananas are expected to ripen this year for the first time at the Aberglasney Gardens in Carmarthenshire and they’re expecting some pineapples there too, reports Wales Online.
Helen Scutt, a trustee at the gardens, told the news provider that Wales has seen 127 per cent more sunshine than average this year compared with the last driest spring in 1990.
"We have had bananas…here for a number of years now but there had not been enough daylight and warmth for them to mature fully – until now.
"The pineapples never came to anything either but we already have pocket-sized pineapples growing close to the ground," she said.
Usually, Wales sees average temperatures of around 19 degrees C but recent highs have been 29 degrees C, still below the record of 31, according to BBC Weather.
