High fruit diet recommended by Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK said a diet high in natural perishables can cut the risk of contracting the disease the organisation is principally concerned with.

The organisation made the comment after publishing details of a new study that found vegetarians are 12 per cent less likely to develop cancer than individuals who enjoy meat.

In particular, instances of the condition in the stomach, bladder and blood was found to be lower in those who choose not to ingest animal flesh.

More than 61,000 volunteers were studied over a period of 12 years and 20 strains of the ailment were scrutinised.

Sara Hiom, director of health information at the body, explained: "The relatively low number of vegetarians who developed cancer in this study supports [our] advice that people should eat a healthy, balanced diet high in fibre, fruit and vegetables."

High levels of saturated fat, salt and red meat are the things to avoid, she added.

The news follows research by the University of New South Wales last month, which suggested eating tomatoes and broccoli could help men reduce their risk of prostate cancer.ADNFCR-2247-ID-19246749-ADNFCR
