Most people would associate Gordon Brown with green papers rather than green fingers.
However, the prime minster – or his wife Sarah, at least – has been digging for victory in the gardens of 10 Downing Street, according to newspaper reports.
Fruit and vegetables grown in the patch behind the house are being sold in the staff canteen, with the Daily Mirror reporting insiders are comparing the Browns with the couple from 1970s comedy series The Good Life.
Lettuces, tomatoes and peppers have all been on the menu at government buildings in recent weeks, having travelled no more than a few metres.
Although the Royal Parks Agency has been responsible for much of the work on the patch, Sarah recently boasted on Twitter about her success with growing Wimbledon’s favourite tasty treat.
"The strawberries have been great, but you have the beat the birds to them – [the] little green peppers [are] looking good now," she Tweeted to a friend.
How long before Downing Street’s wares hit the fruit bowls, dinner tables and office desks of the nation, we wonder…
