Fruit lovers around the country will be peeling, chopping and baking more than usual this week as part of a national celebration of the humble Bramley apple.
Bramley Apple Week, which runs from February 7th to 14th, highlights the fruit’s versatility as a cooking ingredient which is packed full of essential vitamins and antioxidants.
Grown only in Britain, Bramley apples retain their flavour throughout the cooking process and produce a light, airy, moist texture with a ‘melt in the mouth’ consistency.
Bramleys also count towards your five a day, making them a winning choice in the health stakes too.
The apples are a powerful source of antioxidants, including polyphenols, flavonoids, and vitamin C, as well as a good source of fibre, and potassium.
In addition, the antioxidant content of apples has been linked to the prevention of lung cancer and type 2 diabetes.
So why not add stewed Bramley apples (hot or cold) to breakfast cereal or porridge this week for a warming breakfast?
