Even more quality control, banana hold-ups and ‘variety is the spice of life’

Hi there!

Despite it having been a short while since our last Newsletter, Fruitful Office has been busy. We have now planted over 60,000 fruit trees in Malawi, Africa, and have increased the amount of recycled paper in our Fruit Boxes to 100%.

We have also employed someone who spends all of their time looking at quality control. The objective: to ensure all the fruit that reaches our clients is always of the highest quality. The method: our buyer inspects the fruit when purchasing it (for quality and taste), our packers inspect every piece of fruit before it is included in the basket, and our quality control specialist reviews the full baskets before it is sent out.

Looking forward to a good stonefruit season

The cold 2008-09 winter has helped fruit trees, even in traditionally milder climates such as Spain and Italy.

Flowering across Europe kicked off slightly earlier than in 2008, but a cold snap at the start of March reversed this advance. Relatively low temperatures at the end of April led to a delay of around four to eight days in the season - which has really only kicked off now.

We are starting to find sweet peaches/nectarines and plums - which comes as a wonderful change from our  winter mix.

Varieties of plums to look out for: Sapphire, Black Diamond, Black Amber, Greengages, Fortune, Larry Anne, Laetitia, Santa Rosa and Red Beauty.

STOP: this is a Banana hold-up!

A North Carolina teenager used the oldest trick in the book and reportedly tried to rob a store with a concealed banana. According to newspaper reports, John Szwalla held the banana under his shirt when he entered the store, saying he had a gun, and demanded money.

The store owner and a customer overcame the teen, who then managed to eat the banana before the police arrived! The teen now faces charges of attempted robbery and possibly destroying evidence. Police took pictures of the skin. The investigation continues.

Eating a wide variety of fruits is best solution for health

A fibre called pectin, which is found in a broad range of fruits and vegetables, can prevent cancer, according to an ongoing study by the Institute of Food Research.

Professor Vic Morris said the implication is that it would be advisable for consumers to focus on eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables rather than relying only on “super foods” such as blueberries.

The much-vaunted benefits of “super foods” have spurred a boom in sales over the last two years. Sales of blueberries, for example, rose by 132 per cent in that period. A spokeswoman for the British Nutrition Foundation said: “We should not be focusing on these types and ignoring other fruit and vegetables. There are still not enough people getting their five-a- day requirement.”

Help us spread the word: free sample baskets and Vivaboxes

Fruitful Office is a small company and part of our success is based on recommendations from existing clients.

If you give us the contact of someone you know working in other offices in London who might be interested in our service, they will each receive a free sample basket for their office - just to try out our service (with no strings attached). And, if one of your contacts takes on our service for over 2 weeks, we will give you a complementary Fragrance, Magazine or Date an Elephant Vivabox (check them out at www.vivaboxes.co.uk  - we think they are great!).

Have a fruitful week!
